Heinrich Votes To Bring $16 Million Home To Improve Public School Facilitates and Create Clean Energy Jobs

U.S. Representative Martin Heinrich (NM-01) voted for H.R. 2187, the 21st Century Green High-Performing Public School Facilities Act, bringing an estimated $16,077,000 in grant funding to schools in central New Mexico. The funding is a forward-thinking investment in our children that will create clean energy jobs and turn our schools into high performing energy-efficient learning environments. The bill passed the U.S. House of Representatives today by a vote of 275-155.

"This funding is a down payment on our children's health and education," said Rep. Heinrich. "Modernizing school buildings will help revive our economy by creating jobs and preparing workers for the clean energy jobs of the future. New Mexico needs safe and healthy learning environments for our children."

The bill would allow for improvements in school energy efficiency; fire, health, and safety code compliance; compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990; reduction of exposure to noise and hazardous compounds; access to up-to-date technology; and installation of renewable energy systems.

Yesterday, the House unanimously passed an amendment to H.R. 2187 sponsored by Rep. Heinrich. The Heinrich Amendment allows public schools to allocate funds to install environmentally-friendly physical education facilities for our kids.
