Titus Statement on Latest Unemployment Numbers

Today, the Bureau of Labor Statistics released the latest job numbers for April showing that the United States economy lost 539,000 jobs last month compared to 699,000 jobs in March.

"Today's unemployment numbers provide a small glimmer of hope that we are getting close to the bottom of this recession," Congresswoman Titus said. "But with more than half a million jobs lost last month and Nevada still facing record unemployment, our work is far from done. Creating jobs in Southern Nevada remains one of my top priorities and this Congress must continue to take bold action to address this economic crisis."

President Obama also announced today a plan to encourage states to update rules during economic downturns so unemployed workers can enroll in community colleges and other education or training programs without giving up their benefits. In addition, the Department of Education will provide legal guidance to colleges encouraging them to adjust financial aid packages upward for unemployed workers and making clear that colleges will not face audits for doing so in appropriate circumstances.

"Ensuring Nevadans have the skills they need to compete in a 21st century economy is critical to our efforts to turn our economy around. The steps President Obama announced today will help provide people with the necessary training to prepare for the jobs of tomorrow," Titus added.
