Concerned with Growing Debt, Foster Votes Against Democratic Budget

One of Seventeen Democrats to Break with Party

Today, Rep. Bill Foster (IL-14) again voted against the Democratic budget, S. Con. Res. 13. The budget resolution for fiscal year passed the House by a vote of 233-193. Foster was one of seventeen Democrats to vote against his own party. Foster released the following statement.

"On the President's 100th day in office, I commend him for changing the tone in Washington, and also for his work to restart the economy with the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which I voted for and which is already creating thousands of jobs throughout our country.

However, I cannot support the budget because I remain concerned that this bill needs to do more than to begin reducing the deficit - it also needs to lay the path towards paying down the debt. There is a danger in increasing the debt passed down to our children, and we need to balance the spending contained in the recovery package with tough economic measures. I still believe that the key difference here is that I tend to weigh the dangers of long-term debt more heavily than others."
