New York Times -- April 28, 2004

Cong. Bernie Sanders

To the Editor:

As the author of the first legislation offered in Congress to amend the Patriot Act, I concur with you (editorial, April 21). We must fight terrorism, but we can do it without undermining the constitutional rights that have made us a free country.
Americans are demanding major reforms of the Patriot Act. To date, 282 communities have passed resolutions calling for changes in that law. In addition, the state legislatures of Vermont, Maine, Hawaii and Alaska have also gone on record expressing their concerns.

President Bush talks a great deal about freedom. He should practice what he preaches.
