Lummis Statement on Obama Budget Proposal
U.S. Representative Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., a member of the House Budget Committee, issued this statement following the release of President Obama's Fiscal Year 2010 (FY10) budget proposal to Congress:
"On Tuesday, President Obama called on Congress to rein in government spending and exercise fiscal discipline," Lummis said. "Only two days later, the President has failed to live up to his own standards by proposing a $3.6 trillion federal budget - the largest budget in U.S. history."
"The President expects to pay for this massive spending by raising taxes on small businesses, family farms, middle class families, retirees and energy consumers."
"Small businesses create 70 percent of this nation's job growth. Raising taxes on America's small businesses will only serve to hamper their growth and close the door to those Americans searching for a job."
"The budget also includes cap-and-trade taxes, which haven't even been approved by Congress yet. These taxes will increase the cost for Wyoming people to heat their homes, gas up their cars and pay their electric bills. Wyoming's energy industry, which employs tens of thousands of people and brings in hundreds of millions of dollars in tax revenues, will also be hit particularly hard."
"The answer to our nation's economic troubles does not lie with more government spending, let alone higher taxes - the answer lies with allowing Americans to keep more of what they earn and limiting the size of government."
