Lummis: Budget Proposal is Fitting End to Obama's First 100 Days

Statement

U.S. Representative Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., a member of the House Budget Committee, issued this statement following her vote against the Budget Conference report:

"Today marks President Obama's 100th day in the White House," Lummis said. "It is fitting then that this Congress, which has overseen the largest increase in federal spending in U.S. history, chose today to put the $3.6 trillion icing on the cake. The $3.6 trillion budget report passed by the House today calls for unprecedented levels of spending, taxing, and borrowing.

"After four months of continued taxpayer funded bailouts, so-called economic stimulus plans, and bloated spending bills, the American people have every right to feel like their government is leaving them out to dry. Every month, families across this nation balance their checkbooks and live within their means. Unfortunately, Washington has chosen not to follow their good example.

"Instead of putting our economic ship back on course, this budget will triple the national deficit in ten years, raise taxes on small businesses and working families, and mortgage the future of America's children.

"Families today are facing very difficult economic times. If we act wisely, and responsibly, we can turn things around. If we follow the path this budget lays out, we will be digging a hole so deep we may just bury the hopes and dreams of America's next generation."

"That is why I supported an alternative budget proposal that puts America back on the path to prosperity - one that cuts the deficit and government spending while keeping money in the pockets of hard working taxpayers."
