Van Hollen Statement on the Celebration of Earth Day

Today, Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) issued the following statement on the 39th annual celebration of Earth Day:

"In 1970, Americans came together to celebrate the first Earth Day - a day designated to raise awareness on the need to protect our environment and address the issue of climate change. Almost four decades later, we finally stand poised to take action.

"November's historic election sent a clear signal that Americans are ready for change. We can no longer push this issue to our children, leaving future generations in peril as a result of our failure to act. It is unfortunate that critics are relying on misinformation, scare tactics and ideology instead of science. Now is the time to address the climate crisis and reduce America's dependence on foreign oil.

"Congress and President Obama are working hard to tackle the climate change issue in a way that protects both the environment and the American consumer, while creating jobs and helping our economy. I am confident that we will not only address the problem, but serve as a world leader in environmental standards and energy innovation."

Congressman Van Hollen has been a leader on energy issues. On March 17, 2009, he introduced the National Home Energy Savings Revolving Fund Act (LINK). On March 24, 2009, he introduced the Green Bank Act of 2009 (LINK). On April 1, 2009, he introduced the Cap and Dividend Act of 2009 (LINK).
