Sen. Cornyn Statement On GAO Report Regarding ‘Stimulus' Implementation Issues

"The report clearly shows that the Administration and Congressional Democrats gave little thought to the challenges of implementation when they passed the bill"

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, a member of the Senate Finance and Budget Committees, released the following statement today regarding the non-partisan GAO report on the implementation of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act:

"Today's independent, non-partisan GAO report and testimony provided me, my colleagues and all Texans with our first glimpse into how the federal government is doling out hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars in an effort to stimulate the economy. I appreciate the diligence of the GAO and that Texas was one of the states selected for closer study.

"Unfortunately, the GAO has confirmed many of the concerns I raised when my Democrat colleagues pushed to pass this legislation earlier this year. This bill was rushed into law and highly susceptible to waste, fraud and abuse. The report clearly shows that the Administration and Congressional Democrats gave little thought to the challenges of implementation when they passed the bill.

"Accountability and transparency for stimulus funds are the responsibility of the federal government. I will do all that I can to help ensure the process has adequate oversight and accountability measures in place. And if stimulus funds are wasted or misspent, I will hold the Administration responsible."
