Van Hollen Statement on March Job Loss Numbers
Today, Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Assistant to the Speaker, issued the following statement on March's job loss numbers from the Department of Labor:
"Today's unemployment numbers serve as a stark reminder of how many Americans are suffering as a result of the economic and fiscal mess this Congress and President Obama inherited. With an additional 663,000 jobs lost in March, the total number of unemployed people in our country now stands at 13 million. This is the fifteenth month in a row that our economy has lost jobs.
"Congress and President Obama are committed to getting our economy back on track. Yesterday, the House passed a budget that creates jobs, cuts the deficit by two-thirds, provides a $1.5 trillion tax cut for middle class families, and makes critical investments in national priorities that will help turn our economy around. It addresses the concerns facing all Americans - reducing astronomical health care costs, finding ways to be more energy efficient, and improving our education system so our children can succeed.
"Our plan works with the Recovery Act to finally reverse the economic policies of the last eight years that got us into this mess. It will take time, but we will put America back on the path of financial stability and success. The 5.1 million jobs lost since the start of the recession are a clear indication that we must continue to move America in a New Direction."
