Reaction to Executive Order Overturning Embryonic Stem-Cell Restrictions

Congressman John Fleming released this statement today in response to President Obama's executive order overturning restrictions on taxpayer-funded embryonic stem-cell research.

"I am incredibly disappointed that the President has made the decision to allow tax payer dollars to incentivize the destruction of human embryos. As a physician, I care very deeply about patients suffering from diseases or conditions for which there is no cure, but I will not support the immoral destruction of human life in the name of science. Newer techniques for making embryonic-like cells without destroying any embryos and advances in adult stem and umbilical cord blood treatments are showing that embryonic stem cell research is becoming obsolete.

It has not taken long for this Administration to paint a clear picture about where it stands on the issue of life. Pro-life taxpayers are now footing the bill for the promotion of abortions overseas, doctors are in danger of being forced to perform abortions, regardless of moral or religious objections, and now taxpayer funds are going to support the destruction of human embryos in the name of research.

I am fully confident that the promise of stem cell research can be realized without sacrificing human life. Embryonic stem cell research provides no guarantee of scientific advancement, but it does guarantee the unborn have lost a critical battle."
