Chamber of Commerce to Congressman Fleming: "Card Check" is a Job Killer
Members of the Bossier Chamber of Commerce and the Chamber Southwest Louisiana met with Congressman John Fleming today to express their concern over the Employee Free Choice Act, commonly known as "card check." The bill eliminates the use of a secret ballot for employees voting on whether or not to unionize.
"This bill is anti-American," Congressman Fleming told the groups. "The secret ballot is a fundamental right of every citizen in this country and removing it from the workplace is bad for business. With the state of the economy, we need nothing more than incresed employment opportunities, not more legislation that strong arms employees and employers and threatens job creation."
"Small businesses will close, people will lose jobs and card check' will hurt the economy," said Lisa Johnson, Executive Director of the Bossier Chamber of Commerce.
"In this economy, why would Congress even consider adding this kind of challenge," added Rocky Rockett, Executive Director of the Greater Bossier Economic Development Foundation.
This bill is not good for employers, employees or the entire state of Louisiana,"said Kara Lowrie, President of Acadiana Mortgage, one of the business owners present for the meeting.
It was a messaged echoed by the Chamber Southwest Louisiana.
"This legislation will curtail the rights of both employees and employers and will hamper economic recovery and growth," said George Swift, President/CEO of The Chamber SWLA. "The Employment Free Choice Act is counterproductive and just bad for business."
Congressman John Fleming is a co-sponsor of the Secret Ballot Protection Act . This bill protects the right of workers to have secret ballot elections when voting on whether or not to form a union. If passed, this bill will not allow unionization by "card check." The bill would also prevent recognition of a any union formed without a secret ballot election.
