Illinois U.S. Senator Dick Durbin says President Obama's plan to increase the number of troops in Afghanistan is a good idea. Obama has ordered another 4,000 military troops into the embattled country. Durbin says the move will help secure the region and protect America's interests.
DURBIN: We have to finish what we started in Afghanistan in terms of making certain that Al-Qaeda does not re-emerge. The Al-Qaeda forces were responsible for 9/11, they used Afghanistan as their base of operations. We don't want that to happen again.
Durbin says the new troops will serve as trainers for the Afghan army to help them secure the country. The increased troop commitment is in addition to the 17,000 soldiers President Obama ordered into Afghanistan when he first took office.
