Sen. Cornyn Statement On President Obama's Surge In Afghanistan

"It is my hope that President Obama's surge in Afghanistan achieves results similar to the surge in Iraq, enabling victory and bringing our fighting men and women home as soon as possible"

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, made the following statement regarding President Obama's new plan for Afghanistan.

"I commend President Obama on his plan for a surge in Afghanistan, which is our front line in the Global War On Terror. Victory there is imperative, and President Obama and our troops on the ground in Afghanistan have my full support. I will do everything in my power to ensure that Congress provides any and all resources required to accomplish the mission.

"We know that this fight comes at a high price, both in blood and treasure, and we have a fundamental duty and responsibility to provide them with every resource necessary for their safety and success. However, given the marked decrease in overall defense spending that appears in his budget outline, I am not certain the President fully appreciates the substantial amount of funding that our troops will need to properly implement the plan he laid out today. Especially because of this surge, now is not the time to be reducing defense spending overall and canceling numerous major weapon systems critical to our Armed Forces' future ability to defend our country.

"It is my hope that President Obama's surge in Afghanistan achieves results similar to the surge in Iraq, enabling victory and bringing our fighting men and women home as soon as possible."
