Senators Snowe and Collins Pledge to Assist GE Workers Displaced by Economic Downturn

U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe and Susan Collins (R-Maine) released the following joint statement in response to the announcement by the GE Plant in Pittsfield that it will cut more than 100 of its 425 employees. Citing market forces and a slowdown in the economy, the plant, which makes fire and light safety products, says it has offered voluntary severance packages to more than 100 employees. If the packages are not accepted, layoffs will occur.

"Clearly, the current economic crisis has brought great hardship to hundreds of employers throughout the state of Maine forcing many companies to make the hard choice between making payroll or cutting jobs," Senators Snowe and Collins said. "We are deeply disappointed to learn the GE Plant in Pittsfield is being forced to let go more than 100 workers and stand ready to assist with local reemployment efforts.

"Our state staffs have already been in contact with town officials and will work to ensure these displaced workers have access to the federal resources they need to help get them and their families through this difficult time."
