Statement of Governor Kaine on the Appointment of J. Charles Fox to Lead U.S. EPA's Chesapeake Bay Restoration Efforts

RICHMOND - Governor Timothy M. Kaine issued the following statement today on the appointment of J. Charles (Chuck) Fox as a Senior Advisor to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) administrator Lisa Jackson on the Chesapeake Bay and Anacostia River:

"As Governor of the Commonwealth and chairman of the Chesapeake Bay Executive Council, restoring the natural beauty of the Chesapeake Bay is one of my top priorities-that's why more than a billion dollars of state funds have gone into Bay cleanup efforts since I took office, and why I've made the Bay a core part of my Renew Virginia initiative this year.

"I've appreciated the opportunity to dialogue with EPA administrator Lisa Jackson on these and other concerns, and I'm pleased that she has appointed Chuck Fox, a longtime friend of the Bay and a dedicated leader on environmental issues, to lead the agency's efforts.

"Mr. Fox has considerable experience in Maryland state government, the EPA, and the conservation non-profit world. With his wealth of knowledge about the Bay in particular, he is ideally positioned to address the issues impacting this important tributary's health and overall quality. The appointment of Mr. Fox today is a clear indication of the critical value of the Chesapeake Bay among our nation's natural treasures, and I'm happy to hear both the Bay and the Anacostia River are being elevated among the EPA's priorities moving forward.
