Baldwin Statement on President Obama's Message to Congress

"Tonight we heard a strong new President deliver a message of hope and confidence to a nation badly in need of both. I am pleased to see President Obama exercise swift and sure leadership to address the misguided policies of the past eight years and set the nation on the right course. The President admits, and we all know, that our economic recovery and growth will take time, and that we have a long and challenging way to go.

Our economic crises in the financial sector, housing, and employment, are intertwined and fueled by our reliance on foreign oil, out-of-control health care costs, and educational shortcomings that prevent our students from effectively competing in the 21st Century global economy.

To grow the economy for the long-term and restore our leadership position in the world, we must make the transformative investments that all Americans know are necessary - in health, in clean energy, and in education. Health care reform is the issue that brought me into public service. Hearing the President proclaim, ‘Let there be no doubt: health care reform cannot wait, it must not wait, and it will not wait another year,' was truly music to my ears.

Neither the President, nor the Congress, can do it alone. President Obama's message of determination, commitment, and optimism, and the infinite ingenuity of the American people, give me confidence that we will emerge from this difficult period a better, smarter, stronger nation."
