Congressman Fleming's Statement Regarding President Obama's Speech and Governor Jindal's Response
I appreciate the historic significance of tonight's speech and I do agree with the President that Congress should work together to stabilize the economy and create jobs for the American people. But incrementally growing the size of government won't accomplish either goal. We don't need increased taxes, we need to decrease the tax burden so small business can invest in themselves and new employees. I think the president is absolutely correct in saying we need to be fiscally responsible and balance the budget, but wish he would go further to stop the next over spending bill. Right now, there is no end in sight to the runaway spending.
The President also addressed the need for health care for all Americans. As a doctor, I strongly support this assertion, but inserting the government into the doctor/patient relationship is not the long term solution.
With his challenge tonight for increased alternative energy, Louisiana is perfectly positioned to answer the call with the Haynesville Shale. We have the opportunity to be the leader in this country with a plentiful resource in clean natural gas. Maximizing the potential of the Haynesville Shale can lower our dependence on foreign oil, create jobs and sustain the economy of Northwest Louisiana.
And I do think it would be irresponsible to cut funding for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, with both Barksdale Air Force Base and Ft. Polk in my district, I fully support giving our troops the necessary funding to successfully complete their mission in the Middle East.
When it comes to the economy, health care and our troops, Congress must find common ground. The American people are trusting us to rise above the partisan bickering and do what is right for this country.
In Response to Governor Jindal
Americans saw tonight that less government, less spending and real government reform, while protecting our values and free market system, stood toe-to-toe on the national stage and won.
