Statement of Congressman Stephen F. Lynch on President Bush's State of the Union Address

STATEMENT OF CONGRESSMAN STEPHEN F. LYNCH ON PRESIDENT BUSH'S STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS

It's not difficult for me to agree with the President. It's just hard for me to believe him.

He promised our veterans that they'd have access to quality health care, and today tens of thousands of veterans are forced to wait more than six months before they can see a V.A. doctor.

He promised an affordable prescription drug plan for seniors but the one he gave them is in fact unaffordable for most Americans.

He promised to help cities and towns pay for Title I and special education, but he's already under-funded education reform by more than $17 billion.

He promised to stimulate the economy but two years later we've got record-breaking budget deficits and we've lost more than 3 million American jobs.

With a record like President Bush's on keeping promises, we'll be lucky to get halfway to Mars.

And tonight, we heard President Bush promise to do what he can to help strengthen American families. I can't help but be reminded his Administration just implemented new regulations that force 8 million mothers and fathers to work longer overtime hours for lower pay.

His words are not consistent with his actions as President.

President Bush proposed trillions of dollars in new spending tonight that will bury our children and grandchildren in debt. If you look at what he's done, this President believes in giving massive tax cuts to people making more than $1,000,000 a year-and that average families should work longer hours for less pay. He's leading our nation in the wrong direction.
