Sen. Cornyn Hosts Meeting With Galveston And League City Mayors

To continue pressing for hurricane assistance for affected areas

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, today met with Galveston Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas and League City Mayor Toni Randall in his Washington office. Sen. Cornyn assured Mayors Thomas and Randall that he will continue to press for additional assistance from the federal government for Galveston, League City, and other cities still working to recover from Hurricane Ike.

"I welcomed the opportunity to meet with Mayors Thomas and Randall today to discuss an issue that is of great importance for their two cities - Hurricane Ike recovery. These leaders have endured incredibly trying times, and they have sought to ensure the families and businesses they represent can make a full recovery and get back on their feet," Sen. Cornyn said. "I have seen firsthand the devastation in this region and have worked on the federal level to see that their voices are heard and their needs are met."

"While progress has been made since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, particularly when it comes to storm preparation, the post-storm response has been inadequate and disappointing, and delays in temporary housing have been unacceptably slow. Unfortunately, many families are still displaced and communities are in need of assistance as they rebuild. Mayors Thomas and Randall reiterated this today in our meeting, and I assured them I will continue to do everything I can to ensure Galveston, League City and the rest of the impacted region receive the resources they need to make a complete recovery."

In addition to Mayors Thomas and Randall, Galveston County Commissioners Pat Doyle and Stephen Holmes were also present for the meeting.
