Congressman McCaul Fights to Stop Congressional Pay Raise

Taking the oath for his third term representing Texas' 10th Congressional District, Congressman Michael McCaul pledged to continue to work in a bipartisan fashion to move America forward, while maintaining his firm commitment to conservative values and principles.

"My priorities have not changed. Number one is the economy. I look forward to reaching across the aisle and working with the new administration to create incentives for people to invest their money in the markets and minimize government intervention," said Rep. McCaul, who opposed both the Wall Street and Auto Industry bailouts.

At a time of recession, Congressman McCaul sponsored the Stop the Congressional Pay Raise Act filed today. The bill would stop members of Congress from receiving an automatic $4,700 pay raise in 2010. "We in the Congress have to lead the way. It would be irresponsible and an insult to the American people for us to give ourselves a raise at a time when so many are losing their jobs," Rep. McCaul said.

Guarding taxpayer dollars against waste, fraud and abuse; further securing our borders, protecting our homeland and continuing efforts to achieve America's energy independence are also among Congressman McCaul's top priorities.

The 111th Congress goes back to work with America confronting several domestic and global crises that could benefit from Congressman McCaul's national security expertise and service. Rep. McCaul supports the shifting of U.S. military forces to fight the War on Terror at its center, along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. He also will push to further ensure that our border with Mexico is secure.

During the 110th Congress, Rep. McCaul served on the Committees on Foreign Affairs and Homeland Security, where he was Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Emerging Threats, Cybersecurity, Science and Technology. He also served as a member of the Committee on Science and Technology, and the Ethics Committee.

Texas' 10th District stretches from Austin to the west Houston suburbs. It includes Harris, Austin, Waller, Washington, Lee, Burleson, Bastrop and Travis Counties.

Prior to coming to Congress, Michael McCaul served as Chief of Counter Terrorism and National Security in the U.S. Attorney's office in Texas, and led the Joint Terrorism Task Force charged with detecting, deterring and preventing terrorist activity. Congressman McCaul also served as Texas Deputy Attorney General under current U.S. Senator John Cornyn, and served as a federal prosecutor in the Department of Justice's Public Integrity Section in Washington, D.C.

A fourth generation Texan, Congressman McCaul earned a B.A. in Business and History from Trinity University and holds a J.D. from St. Mary's University School of Law. He is also a graduate of the Senior Executive Fellows Program of the School of Government, Harvard University.

Congressman McCaul and his wife Linda live in Austin, Texas with their five children Caroline, Jewell, and the triplets Lauren, Michael and Avery. He returns home from Washington almost every week to be with his family and constituents.
