WALZ STATEMENT ON THE INAUGURATION OF PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA

"I was humbled today by the words of President Obama as he began this new chapter in American history, not with overstated optimism or exaggerated bravado, but with clarity of purpose, confidence in our shared dream, and recognition of our challenging circumstances.

"Average Americans have longed to be called to action, to be called into the service of their country. Today, President Obama reaffirmed the call of presidents-past for citizens to serve their communities and their country.

"President Obama is right - the questions are not whether the market is a force for good or ill, or whether the government it too big or too small. The question we must answer is whether our programs and our laws work; whether they expend prosperity in an effort to achieve the common good.

"It is my greatest hope that President Obama will be the impetus for Washington to return to a place where good ideas compete with each other through respectful debate. A place where, though our destiny is uncertain, our common cause inspires us to greatness."
