Capito Announces $24,168 Grant for Tornado Volunteer Fire Department

Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) today announced that the Tornado Volunteer Fire Department has been awarded $24,168 by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The funds come as an Assistance to Firefighters Grant.

"This is important news for our firefighters in Tornado," said Capito. "They do incredible work on behalf of the people of Kanawha County and this funding will help ensure they're adequately prepared to serve and protect their neighbors."

This grant will specifically support the purchase of new turnout gear and boots to ensure compliance with safety standards.

"The Tornado VFD provides fire and rescue protection and mutual aid to thousands of residents located around West Virginia's Capital City of Charleston, as well as providing mutual aid to bordering counties," wrote Capito in a letter to homeland security officials on behalf of the Tornado Volunteer Fire Department.

"These much needed grant funds will allow the Tornado VFD to purchase the equipment they need to protect the citizens of Kanawha County, as well as the citizens of other counties to which it provides mutual aid."

Grants awarded through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program seek to help enhance the preparedness capabilities of local fire departments and emergency medical service (EMS) organizations. Funding often supports equipment upgrades and training for first responders.
