Murphy Statement on U.S. District Court Decision on Schaghticoke Tribal Nation Recognition Appeal

Contact: Kristen Bossi

Congressman Chris Murphy (CT-5) released the following statement on the U.S. District court rejecting an appeal from the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation to overturn the Bureau of Indian Affairs' refusal to give Schaghticokes federal recognition.

"Yesterday's decision by the U.S. District Court confirms the fact that the Bureau of Indian Affairs' 2006 action to deny federal recognition to the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation was a sound and correct decision. Undue political influence was never the reason that the Schaghticokes failed to achieve permanent recognition; the fact is that the empirical basis for their federal recognition simply doesn't exist. I applaud Judge Peter C. Dorsey's decision, as it supports the integrity and fairness of the federal tribal recognition process."
