DeLauro Statement on FDA 2009 Funding

Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro, chairwoman of the Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee, issued the following statement on the funding for the FDA included in the Continuing Resolution.

"This Democratic-controlled Congress has always recognized the importance of providing the FDA with critical resources necessary to ensure the safety of food, prescription drugs, and medical devices. In addition to providing $150 million in the supplemental appropriations bill earlier this year, we are on-track to maintain that level of funding for the duration of the continuing resolution.

"Between the Salmonella outbreak this summer and the on-going problems involving tainted baby formula in China, we are constantly reminded of FDA's critical role in protecting the public health. Congress is following through with its commitment to provide additional resources for the FDA. It is now up to the agency to be held accountable and ensure that these resources are spent wisely."
