DeLauro Statement on Contaminated Chinese Candy Found on Connecticut Store Shelves

Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-3) issued the following statement in response to reports that Chinese candy contaminated with melamine has been found on store shelves in Connecticut.

"Unfortunately, our worst fears have been realized - candy contaminated with melamine that was imported from China has been found on store shelves in the U.S. This development is especially alarming because it involves products that are easily accessed by children. Because of the great work by the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station in New Haven, the state of Connecticut was immediately able to remove these products from store shelves.

"While the FDA issued a consumer advisory alert about contaminated infant formula from China three weeks ago, I am concerned that the FDA did not immediately focus on preventing other dairy products from China from entering the U.S. illegally.

"We have become all too aware in the past two years of the deadly hazards imported food products from China can pose to consumers. And with China's inability to reform its food safety system, the FDA must be especially focused when investigating contaminated products from China."
