DeLauro Statement on GAO Investigation into Food Labeling

Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) issued the following statement on the Government Accountability Office investigation into food labeling, which found that the Food and Drug Administration needs to better use resources and improve oversight to ensure consumers are able to choose healthy foods.

"The findings of this latest GAO investigation that the FDA seems incapable of preventing companies from providing false or misleading information to consumers are very troubling. The public relies on the information on these labels to make healthy food choices and it is the FDA's responsibility to ensure companies are complying with these laws and regulations.

"For instance, companies should not be allowed to claim that bread is ‘made with whole wheat' when it is made primarily with bleached white flour.

"These findings by the GAO seem to point to another example of how FDA mismanagement is failing consumers. As Congress moves next year toward reforming FDA's food safety responsibilities, this is another area that warrants close examination and potentially a major overhaul."
