Governor Proclaims Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week
Gov. Mike Rounds today proclaimed November 16-22 as Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week in South Dakota. The goal is to promote education, action, and awareness about those who are less fortunate that most.
"I encourage everyone to support organizations that are committed to providing shelter, supportive services, meals, clothing, and other supplies to individuals and families in need," said Gov. Rounds. "This is especially important during our harsh winter months."
In 2007, The South Dakota Housing for the Homeless Consortium completed a statewide homeless count in which 1,029 men, women, and children were homeless on one given day. The majority of these individuals and families were residing in shelters or on the street.
Due to the current economic conditions, shelters and food ministries across South Dakota and the nation are experiencing an increase in the number of individuals and families that are looking to them for meals and services. The Cornerstone Rescue Mission in Rapid City now serves meals to an average of 400 people a day compared to 300 in years past. The Banquet in Sioux Falls has also increased the number of meals provided on a daily basis. In October 2008, they served up to 13,546 meals.
National Hunger and Homeless Awareness week is nationally recognized the week prior to Thanksgiving. First publicized and promoted as a national event in 1988, it has grown in recognition. Events are being held across the state and nation to promote awareness and provide education. Everyone is encouraged to participate in their local events to further awareness and education.
