Congressman Johnson Calls on Americans to Commemorate 9/11 as a Day of Remembrance and Resolve
On the eve of the seventh anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Rep. Hank Johnson (GA-04) called upon Americans to commemorate 9/11 as a day of remembrance and resolve.
"Even though seven years have passed since the horrifying terrorist attack of 9/11, we are all mindful of the thousands of innocent men, women and children who lost their lives. On this anniversary of that unforgettable moment in our nation's history, we extend our sympathies to their families, friends, and loved ones," Rep. Johnson said.
"As we think of those lost, we also honor the brave men and women who worked so hard, in countless heroic actions, helping those in need and protecting those in harm's way -- often at the expense of their own lives," added Rep. Johnson.
"Our work is not done, said Representative Johnson. "On this day, we renew our efforts at bringing those responsible for this heinous act to justice and taking the actions necessary to effectively protect our nation from further attack."
During this 110th Congress, to better protect Americans from terrorism and improve homeland security, a critical piece of legislation was enacted in August 2007. The legislation (H.R. 1) completes the enactment of recommendations from the bipartisan, independent 9/11 Commission. This law requires 100 percent screening of cargo on passenger aircraft within three years, requires 100 percent scanning of seaborne cargo before it gets to U.S. ports within five years, ensures that first responders can communicate with each other in an emergency, and improves rail and mass transit security.
"I am proud of our nation for coming together after that tragic day seven years ago and telling the world, never again'. We must not forget the lessons of that day and we must never stop working to keep it from happening again." Rep. Johnson concluded.
