Walberg Votes To Uphold Second Amendment Rights

Urges Senate to Pass Bill Affirming Gun Rights for Law-Abiding Residents

U.S. Congressman Tim Walberg (R-MI) today issued the following statement after voting for the National Capital Security and Safety Act, legislation that would reaffirm Second Amendment rights to residents of Washington, D.C.

"In June, the Supreme Court weighed in with a landmark decision affirming the Second Amendment's right to bear arms. The decision overturned a Washington, D.C. law that outlawed private ownership of new handguns. The D.C. law also stated that all firearms, including rifles and shotguns, have to be kept ‘unloaded, disassembled, or bound by a trigger lock,' and thankfully the unconstitutionality of this law was brought to light.

"Unfortunately, the District of Columbia City Council is acting in defiance of the Supreme Court's decision. Though the Court ruled that ‘the District's ban on handgun possession in the home violates the Second Amendment, as does its prohibition against rendering any lawful firearm in the home operable for the purpose of immediate self-defense,' the city continues to make it terribly difficult for residents to acquire handguns. Through new restrictions, increased bureaucracy and added paperwork requirements, Washington, D.C. is effectively still denying its citizens the right to bear arms.

"I believe the city should immediately restore Second Amendment rights to the law-abiding residents of our nation's capital, which is why today I voted for the National Capital Security and Safety Act, H.R. 6842. This bill will ensure that appropriate gun rights are granted to D.C. citizens by allowing them to purchase a pistol or revolver from a gun dealer in Maryland or Virginia. The bill would also allow gun owners to own guns without registering them with the city government. Additionally, gun owners could have guns in their homes and stored in a way suitable to quickly defend their property and families.

"It's time for Washington, D.C. to comply with the Supreme Court's affirmation of the Second Amendment, and this legislation protects the rights of gun owners across our country. I urge the Senate to pass it promptly, so the President can sign it into law."
