SCHUMER, CLINTON PUSH FOR BUFFALO TO HOST 2009 GREAT LAKES INTERNATIONAL CHALLENGE CUP RACE
Prestigious Boat Race Would Promote Continued Renaissance of Buffalo Waterfront
Senators Charles E. Schumer and Hillary Rodham Clinton made their case to the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) in support of the request by the Buffalo Yacht Club to hold the 2009 Great Lakes International Challenge Cup Race off the Erie Basin Marina. In a letter to USCG Sector Buffalo Marine Events Coordinator, Petty Officer Jessica Seguin, the lawmakers stressed that the boat race would attract yachting enthusiasts and spectators to the Erie Basin Marina, which would continue to add to the excitement and interest of the resurgent Buffalo Waterfront area.
"This would be a big win for Buffalo. Because the Great Lakes International Challenge Cup attracts boaters from across the country, this event will bring much-needed tourism dollars to Western New York," said Schumer. "The Erie Basin Marina is the perfect venue for this exciting experience and will offer spectators a prime view of the race from the shore. I am happy to support the Buffalo Yacht Club's request to host the race in the vicinity of the Marina so that the region can reap the benefits that this event will bring. "
"Hosting the Great Lakes International Challenge Cup Race next summer would not only provide a boost to the City's local businesses, it will also showcase and draw people to the resurgent Buffalo Waterfront," said Senator Clinton. "I appreciate the leadership of the Buffalo Yacht Club in working to bring this race to the area, and I can think of no better way to help promote the Waterfront than to stage this yachting tournament off of the Erie Basin Marina. I'm proud to support this effort and I urge Sector Buffalo to grant the request."

Dear Petty Officer Seguin:
We are pleased to write in support of the Buffalo Yacht Club's request to stage the Great Lakes International Challenge Cup Race off Erie Basin Marina from June 12 through June 14, 2009.
This match race event would be similar to an America's Cup style competition but with smaller boats. Two boats would race against each other at one time, allowing for multiple races to proceed simultaneously. The placement of this race in the vicinity of the Erie Basin Marina would allow spectators to view the event from shore, generating much excitement and increased interest in Buffalo's unique waterfront.
We applaud the Buffalo Yacht Club and its community partners for their foresight, and we respectfully request that you give this application your full consideration. For additional information, please do not hesitate to contact our offices.
Sincerely Yours,
Hillary Rodham Clinton Charles E. Schumer
