DeLauro Statement on FDA's Report on the Safety of BPA

Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-3) issued the following statement on the Food and Drug Administration's report on the safety of Bisphenol A.

"Despite the concerns about their objectivity, the FDA Science Board subcommittee agreed with the many independent scientists that questioned FDA's initial assessment on BPA. The panel was critical of the FDA draft report on BPA and is reinforcing the position that the FDA should re-start the BPA evaluation process.

"The panel found the FDA assessment inadequate. It further demonstrates how poorly the agency has handled its review of BPA and the significant work that lies ahead in improving the agency's performance.

"I remain concerned about the conflict of interest issues surrounding the Science Board and the BPA subcommittee, and the role of ICF in the FDA's draft report. I continue to urge the FDA to ensure that independent scientists are part of the BPA review process when it begins anew."
