Congresswoman Betty McCollum (MN-4) released the following statement regarding the Great Lakes compact:
"The Great Lakes contain over 90% of our nation's fresh surface water and are among America's most valued natural resources. I could not in good conscience vote for S.J. Res. 45 because the legislation has implications for generations to come and does not go far enough to protect against privatization, commercialization, and exportation. For example, the bill's definition of Great Lakes water as a "product" was one of many ambiguous provisions, which required greater scrutiny. While I commend the Governors of the Great Lakes states for their efforts to put forth this bill, as a Member of Congress I still had questions that went unanswered," said Congresswoman Betty McCollum (MN-4).
