Sen. Cornyn Statement On Democrats' Calls For A Massive Spending Measure As Budget Deficit Closes In On $1 Trillion

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, a member of the Senate Budget Committee, made the following statement regarding calls by Democratic leaders in Congress to pass a massive new spending measure, outside of the regular budget and appropriations process, immediately after the November election.

"Members of the United States Senate have a responsibility to work together and pass legislation that will help working families and small businesses, and boost the economy. But they also have a responsibility to do so in a fiscally responsible manner. In the two years since the Democrats have taken control, Congress has failed to address the rising debt of the federal government, rein in wasteful spending and pass much-needed entitlement reforms. The American people are rightfully concerned that we are on an unstoppable fiscal train wreck.

"I am deeply concerned about discussions of a new massive spending measure by Democrats, which would continue Washington's bad habit of spending now and asking for future generations to pay later. Congress should roll up its sleeves and do the hard work of eliminating waste, fraud, abuse and unnecessary spending items. The last thing Congress should do is grow the size of government and pass more debt down to our children and grandchildren.

"Instead, Congress should focus on keeping taxes low for working families and small businesses, putting in place an ‘all-the-above' energy policy, modernizing our financial system, and encouraging free trade to generate economic growth and create more jobs here at home. This is the most effective way to help American families and small businesses," Sen. Cornyn said.
