Sen. Cornyn Joins Mayor Leppert & Local Leaders To Launch Phoenix House After-School Program For At-Risk Youth

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, today attended the Grand Opening of the Phoenix House after-school program Intervention Moves Parents and Children Together (IMPACT), designed to offer a healthy environment for at-risk youth. He was joined by Mayor Tom Leppert, Rep. Pete Sessions (TX-32), Phoenix House Executive Vice President Monty Mueller, and Dallas ISD Trustee Dr. Edwin Flores.

"The IMPACT program here in Dallas is a great example of the positive influence we can have on a community when the public and private sectors work together to address local challenges. By investing in today's at-risk youth, the IMPACT program's mentors can help to steer these young people onto a positive path and equip them with the tools they need to lead successful lives. At the same time, the Recreation Center will give students an opportunity to incorporate physical fitness into their lives and learn to make healthy choices.

"I have been a strong supporter of Phoenix House and have worked to secure federal funding for this and other programs it offers - including rehabilitation services for young people addicted to ‘cheese heroin' and other dangerous drugs. I want to thank the skilled and caring staff at Phoenix House for their hard work and commitment to the Dallas community," Sen. Cornyn said.

"I also want to thank the City of Dallas and Mayor Leppert, Congressman Sessions, and Dr. Flores for their role in advancing this impressive program. I look forward to continuing to work together on valuable programs like this that make a positive difference in the lives of Texas youth."

Sen. Cornyn has been a staunch supporter of Phoenix House and for Fiscal Year 2008, he worked to secure $658,000 in federal funding to support its programs, including the development of the IMPACT program. Sen. Cornyn has worked closely with Phoenix House, the City of Dallas and Dallas ISD on this project.
