Peters Calls for Immediate Action in Response to VA Shredding

A routine inspection of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) regional office in Detroit discovered veterans' disability and compensation claims in a paper shredder bin. Congressional candidate Gary Peters, a former Lt. Commander in the Navy Reserve, issued the following statement:

"As a veteran and the son of a veteran, I am deeply concerned about the reports of potential destruction of veterans disability and compensation papers. If these reports are true, it is a severe violation of our sacred commitment to veterans, a violation of VA policy, and perhaps even a violation of the law.

"Secretary James Peake's immediate response to these reports was to call a halt to any further shredding of paper at regional VA offices. This was appropriate, but it is only the first step.

"The VA must immediately initiate an investigation to find how many veterans were affected by these alleged violations. The VA must immediately publicize a mechanism by which veterans can make sure their files are intact. Lastly, the VA must immediately begin to recover any lost information for affected veterans.

"This incident is just the latest reminder of a deeper problem in our veterans care system. Anything less than a swift and decisive response to these reports would be a betrayal of the servicemen and servicewomen who have sacrificed so much for this country.

"In Congress, I will take immediate action to investigate this travesty and to hold the responsible parties accountable."
