HEADLINE: Hoyer Celebrates Cinco de Mayo and America's Proud Hispanic Heritage
DATELINE: WASHINGTON, May 5
BODY:
Congressman Steny Hoyer (D-MD) released the following statement today in celebration of Cinco de Mayo and in recognition of the notable contributions of Mexican Americans to our country:
"I join today with millions of Americans in celebrating Cinco de Mayo, a historical day commemorating the triumph of the Mexican people over the French Army in the battle of Puebla in 1862.
"This day of celebration for Mexican patriots gives all Americans an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the political, cultural and economic contributions of Mexican-Americans to our nation, such as Ellen Ochoa, the first Hispanic woman astronaut, Antonia Novello, the first woman and the first Hispanic U.S. Surgeon General, and Cesar Chavez, a civil rights pioneer who dedicated his life to improving the lives of farm workers.
"The nation's Hispanic population is booming and swelled by 58 percent in the past decade, making it the fastest growing minority group. And, Latinos are leading a record 1.2 million number of small businesses with annual revenues of nearly $200 billion. Hispanics are increasingly engaged in public service at all levels, including 25 Hispanic Members in the United States Congress, many of them Mexican-Americans.
"Last year, Democrats introduced the Democratic Hispanic Agenda, Compromiso Democrata con el Pueblo Latino, which demonstrates our unwavering commitment to issues important to the Latino community. Democrats, Hispanics, and hard working American families share an interest in fair and fiscally responsible tax policies, improving access to small business programs, ensuring access to quality affordable health care and making educational improvements that will create opportunity and grow the economy.
"I join today with all Americans in celebrating Cinco de Mayo and the important contributions of Mexican-Americans to our nation."
