Rep. Foster Votes to Lower Taxes for Middle-Class Families

As part of his continued efforts to protect middle-class families and support tax relief, Rep. Bill Foster (IL-14) voted in favor of increasing the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) exemption, joining a bipartisan majority yesterday in a 393-30 vote.

"I was proud to join a bipartisan majority in voting to provide critical tax relief to 25 million Americans during these turbulent times," Rep. Foster said. "As we work to fix the broken parts of our economy, providing tax relief for our families has to be part of the solution. Increasing the AMT's exemption will be a huge relief for our middle-class families."

The Alternative Minimum Tax Act of 2008, H.R. 7005, protects 25 million middle-class families from exposure to the AMT by increasing the exemption amount to $69,950 for joint filers and $46,200 for individuals. The bill will provide $62 billion in AMT tax relief, which will help ease the strain middle-class Americans are feeling from the increase in energy and food prices.

"By increasing the AMT exemption, we are putting middle-class families first and strengthening our economy," Rep. Foster said. "As I listen to constituents all over the 14th District, they repeatedly tell me how the increases in gas and grocery prices have made it difficult to make ends meet. In a time of great economic uncertainty, we found a bipartisan solution to make sure the families of 14th District are protected and have the tax relief they need and deserve."
