Jeanne Shaheen Statement of Iraq Troop Withdrawal Agreement

Statement

Date: Aug. 22, 2008
Location: Manchester, NH

Former Governor and current candidate for US Senate
Jeanne Shaheen released the following statement today in response to news
that U.S. and Iraqi negotiators have reached agreement on a proposal
calling for a complete U.S. military withdrawal from Iraq by 2011.

"For too long, George Bush and John Sununu have led America in the wrong
direction. Our men and women in uniform have done everything that has been asked of them and our military presence in Iraq is no longer moving the
country toward the political reconciliation that it must achieve for
itself.

"While it's long overdue, I'm pleased to see the Bush Administration
has finally realized what the majority of Americans have: that we need to
end the war in Iraq and withdraw our troops as safely and quickly as
possible.

"By quickly and responsibly removing our troops from Iraq, we can also begin the hard work of rebuilding our alliances and restoring America's reputation in the world.

"The devastating, mismanaged war in Iraq has made us less safe. Removing
our troops from Iraq as quickly and safely as possible allows us to focus
on the real threat of terrorism in Afghanistan and Pakistan."
