Capito Votes to Restore $8 Billion to Highway Trust Fund

Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) today joined a bipartisan majority in the House of Representatives to restore $8 billion in funding for the Federal Highway Trust Fund.

Today's legislation - HR 6532 - would authorize an immediate transfer of $8 billion from the U.S. Treasury's General Fund to fund and support highway maintenance and infrastructure.

"Safe, secure highways and transportation infrastructure are essential for economic growth and efficient transportation," said Capito. "The recent surge in energy costs has placed great strain on the resources available to fund transportation infrastructure and this bill will help offset those costs."

"At a time when we have significant needs and infrastructure challenges, we must ensure that we allocate the appropriate resources to update and improve our roads, highways and bridges."

Capito is a member of the House of Representatives Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. She recently visited the site of the I-35 bridge collapse in Minnesota to discuss the need for infrastructure investment. She has been an advocate for federal investment in highway infrastructure - including local initiatives like US Route 35 in Putnam and Mason Counties, and the Raleigh Street Extension in Berkeley County.
