WCA TV - "Gilmore and Warner Square Off in Fairfax Debates"

Virginia will have distinctively different candidates to choose from this November in the race for the senate, Thursday former governors Mark Warner and Jim Gilmore layed out their platforms hoping to convince a room full of business men and women why they should be elected.

"I felt that it was the best debate that I've ever been in throughout the years," said Peggy Trossen who attended the debate.

The candidates wasted no time attacking eachother's records as governor.

"The people of Virginia, Republicans, Democrats, and Independents want to know that they will have a senator that will keep his word," said Republican senate candidate Jim Gilmore.

"No part of Virginia was more broken than Virginia's transportation efforts when I became governor," said Democratic senate candidate Mark Warner.

Energy and gas prices dominated much of the debate, Warner saying the country should explore all options.

"Has a comprehensive energy plan that agrees with more alternative energy, more drilling, all the alternatives out there," said Warner.

But Gilmore who supports off shore drilling and drilling in ANWR, says Warner is all talk.

"Honestly you will not drill for oil off shore," said Gilmore. "You just can't take yes for an answer," said Warner.

"Let's be honest about this, it's not that I can't take yes for an answer it's that I don't believe yes," said Gilmore.

Touching on other topics such as Wall Street and foreign policy, leaving voters with a clear idea of where each candidate stands.

"I'm pretty clear on who I'm going to vote for and I think this debate really clarified that for me," said Cathy Lange who attended the debate.
