House Conference Secretary John Carter (TX-31) issued the following statement today after House Democrats rammed a "no energy" energy bill through the house without allowing an open and honest debate.
"Democrats have returned from their five-week paid vacation only to pass an energy bill that puts 80 percent of American oil on the Outer Continental Shelf permanently out of reach of the American people. This bill, disguised as a drilling bill' restricts all energy exploration in Alaska's North Slope and in the western mountains. It bans any efforts to produce safe nuclear and clean coal-to-liquids technology, and does not include plans to build more American oil refineries. As if that weren't enough, this bill raises taxes and increases the cost of energy for families and businesses by creating electricity mandates.
"This bill is not the bill the American people have been waiting for. In fact, this bill doesn't do a single thing to help consumers, nor does it answer the cries of frustrated Americans pummeled by high gas and food prices."
