In Remembrance of Our Fallen Heroes

On this, the seventh anniversary of the cowardly attack on American citizens in New York City and Arlington, Virginia, it is only fitting that we pause in the work of an election campaign to remember those men and women who lost their lives in that terrible attack.

We remember the firefighters, police and emergency services personnel that placed themselves in harms way that day to serve their fellow man. These brave souls ran into the towers as others were fleeing. Duty called and they responded without hesitation or regret. Many never left as they provided their greatest sacrifice when the towers collapsed.

We must remember, too, those who died in the fields of Southwestern Pennsylvania on Flight 93, ending their heroic struggle to take back their aircraft and prevent our enemies from causing even more deaths and from taking even more parents from their children and their families.

This is also a fitting time to remember the sacrifices of those men and women in our armed services who have been living, dying, and battling on our behalf against the forces of terrorism around the world.

I believe it is important today, too, that we pledge ourselves to continue the struggle against terrorism, all of us, elected officials, private citizens, people of all political parties, until the world is safe again, and the insanity of terrorist attack is forever behind us.

America has fought great battles in the past. We have defeated many enemies, some of them equally committed to worldwide destruction and worldwide domination. These terrorists are nothing new. Their goals are old and familiar to us. We defeated them in Nazi Germany, we defeated them in militaristic Japan, and we will defeat them throughout the world today. Terrorism is nothing more than fascism, by another name.

America stands for freedom in the world. To this day, our commitment to individual liberty and political self-determination remains the most revolutionary force ever set loose on the face of the globe. We will not step back from the challenges of today. We will fight terrorism wherever it exists and we will not be discouraged from our task by acts of suicidal evil.

To those who have lost loved ones in this War on Terror, we will keep you in our prayers, today and everyday, and we will do everything we can to see that their lives were not lived nor lost in vain, and that the loss you suffered will teach us the lessons and renew in us the dedication to see that your fellow citizens are spared such brutal harm in the days and years to come. To you, we pledge our faith and efforts that your loved ones will never be forgotten, and that the barbarians will be kept forever off our shores.
