Sen. Cornyn: Passage of Landmark US-India Nuclear Agreement Long Overdue; Will Strengthen Important Partnership With India

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, founder and co-chairman of the Senate India Caucus, made the following statement tonight regarding Senate passage of H.R. 7081, the US-India Nuclear Agreement:

"This landmark agreement represents the latest example of India, the world's largest democracy, and the U.S. working together on issues of mutual benefit. The civil nuclear initiative serves both the interests of the United States and the interests of India, with its more than one billion citizens. In light of its growing demand for energy and its track record as a responsible actor on nonproliferation issues, India is an appropriate and worthy partner in this historic deal. The agreement will pave the way for cooperative efforts in peaceful civilian nuclear power, while simultaneously addressing concerns about nuclear proliferation.

"I believe this long-overdue deal will further strengthen our economic and political ties with India, already an important U.S. ally, as well as our own national security. As founder and co-chairman of the Senate India Caucus, I was proud to support this agreement and push for its passage over the past several years. Today's Senate approval of the deal is great news, and it marks an important milestone in U.S.-India relations, which I believe will grow even stronger," Sen. Cornyn said.
