Cornyn Votes To Hold Line On Unnecessary Spending And Against A Ban On Western Oil Production

Says Reid Spending Package Won't Stimulate the Economy and Reverses Victory on Oil Exploration

U.S. Senator John Cornyn, R-Texas, a member of the Senate Budget Committee, today released the following statement regarding his vote against a $56 billion spending package offered by Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid:

"America is facing serious economic issues that require serious leadership and strong fiscal discipline. Unfortunately, the answer from my Democratic colleagues was to put forward an election-year spending proposal that would drive the federal debt even higher and do nothing to move our economy forward.

"In fact, it would make it worse by once again handcuffing energy production here at home. The American people won an important victory this week when Congress lifted a federal ban on energy production offshore and in Western states -- an effort that Senate Republicans, including myself, had long fought for. With gas prices still far too high and the national economy struggling, reinstating a ban on domestic energy production is the last thing we ought to do. Unfortunately, that is exactly what the Democratic leader sought to do by slipping it into this bloated spending proposal.

"It's my hope that in the remaining days of this Congress, these types of games will stop and both parties will work together to address the very important issues facing this country."
