Straten Supports Gore on Energy Policy

"Former Vice President Al Gore's challenge to switch all the nation's electricity production to wind, solar, and other environment friendly sources within 10 years makes sense," says Roland Straten, Republican Congressional candidate from New Jersey's 8th district. "While I do not agree with everything Vice President Gore said, he made some very valid points which we should listen to and do our best to implement"

"Mr. Gore rightly points out that we have virtually unlimited solar energy and we need to develop new technology to harness that power," says Straten. "With the rising cost of oil, wind and solar power will become increasingly cost competitive."

"Mr. Gore's comment that ‘We just have to listen to what the engineers and scientists are telling us about the advances in the efficiency and the reductions in cost of how we can use solar and wind and also geothermal' is refreshing," says Straten. "This is one of the very few times that a politician has advocated listening to the people who make the systems work before deciding what should be done."

Straten, who has been stressing his engineering background in his Congressional race, agrees we must transition out of oil, but in a manner that will not threaten our economic or national security. "This means we need to simultaneously continue to drill for new oil as we pursue alternative energy sources," says Straten. "We need a smarter energy policy developed with the input of experts, and one size will not fit all. Only by establishing a reasonable new course can we break free from our dependence on foreign oil and maintain our standard of living."
