Statement on Possible Rescue of Financial Markets

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Robert Aderholt (R-Haleyville) today made the following statement about the possible taxpayer rescue of the financial markets.

"Our economy is facing historic challenges and I am frustrated by the apparent irresponsibility and greed on Wall Street that is now affecting our economy. As Congress considers a rescue plan from President Bush that aims to stabilize our economy, I am very troubled that our tax money could be used to bail out companies that went after the easy buck at the expense of hard-working Americans."

"However, I am also distressed that many financial experts claim that a lack of confidence in the markets could lead to an economic depression. I am also concerned that financial experts say that American jobs could be in jeopardy and that Americans with good credit might have difficulty accessing home or auto loans."

"I am following this situation very closely and am considering all angles and arguments to this bailout. I am committed to working in a bipartisan way with the Administration and our Democratic colleagues to protect the taxpayer, hold companies accountable and get our economy back on track."

"Even though the stakes are high, I have very serious concerns over the increasing and constant government intervention to help failing private sector companies with tax payer's dollars. The American people deserve to see their political leaders working together in this time of crisis, and I intend on working hard to see to it that taxpayer money is spent wisely."
