Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-3), a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, announced that funding will double for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). This is the largest increase in the 27-year history of the program

The bill that will fund government operations increases the funding from $2.6 billion in 2008 to $5.1 billion in 2009 and as a result Connecticut will also see an increase from $65.6 million this year to $95.5 million.

"The increased funding for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program is long-awaited news for Connecticut's families. Winter is right around the corner and by doubling the funding we can take a significant step in reducing the number of families forced to choose between heating their homes, paying the rent and putting food on the table.

"Families in Connecticut and across the Northeast will face record prices for all home heating fuels this year. And we need to address the underlying reasons for these sky-rocketing prices, which is why voted in favor of comprehensive energy legislation. It will ensure we explore all of the possible solution to the energy crisis - drilling, accelerated production, repealing tax subsidies for the big five oil companies, investment in and expansion of alternative and renewable sources of energy, and increased energy efficiency and conservation

"We have always known that the very poor need help, but this year we need to reach out to struggling working families as well. And we should also expand the eligibility of the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program. More people than ever need our help, and we should make sure they can get it.

"This funding increase for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program is needed. We have always had a strong ally in Chairman Obey and I am pleased that we have support for increased funding from my colleagues on the Appropriations Committee. I am proud that even with tight budget constraints, this Congress has made LIHEAP funding a priority."
