Sen. Cornyn Statement on Historic Jump in Crude Oil Prices

Says High Energy Prices & Economic Anxiety in America Require Action on Comprehensive Energy Bill

With crude oil prices rising today to $120.92, the highest one-day jump in history, U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, Vice-Chair of the Senate Republican Conference, said the current economic anxiety facing the country requires long overdue action now, more than ever, on a comprehensive energy bill by the Democratic-led Congress.

"Today's historic price jump and the pain American families continue to face at the gas pump, remind all of us that this Congress has done nothing to address the energy and economic crisis facing our country today.

"Common-sense solutions to promote alternative energy, produce more energy here at home, and protect American consumers have fallen victim to partisan political games. The American people, including my constituents in Texas, are looking to Congress and demanding answers. Unfortunately, Congress is asleep at the wheel - either by denial or by design.

"Earlier this year, the Democratic leadership closed the doors of Congress for the month of August without even allowing a vote on more domestic production. Seven weeks later, nothing has changed.

"Families in Texas and across the country deserve better. They demand bipartisan solutions. We have the potential to meet our nation's energy needs with energy produced here at home. I have supported several common-sense measures that would open up oil-rich regions of the United States to energy exploration and production, while promoting alternative energy. I will continue my efforts to pass these measures in order to lower prices at the pump and comprehensively address our energy needs."
