Sen. Cornyn Meets With Abilene Officials To Discuss Local Projects, Other Important Issues

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, hosted a meeting in his Capitol Hill office today with Abilene leaders to discuss local projects and other issues important to the area, including a "Waste to Energy" initiative at Dyess Air Force Base. On hand for today's meeting were Mayor Norm Archibald, City Manager Larry Gilley, and City Councilmen Sam Chase and Robert Briley.

"I appreciated the opportunity to meet with Abilene officials today to discuss local projects and initiatives. They told me about all the good work being done to spur growth and maintain a strong economy in Abilene," Sen. Cornyn said. "I was particularly pleased to hear an update on the ‘Waste to Energy' initiative, which is still in the early stages, but will help provide Dyess Air Force Base with energy savings and greater energy security."

"At a time when Americans are paying record prices at the pump and dependence on foreign oil is at its highest, finding new and innovative ways to address our nation's energy crisis is critical," continued Sen. Cornyn.

The project would have several important benefits, including enabling Dyess Air Force Base to save money by purchasing electricity at a reduced rate and providing a more secure, on-base source of electricity. Abilene would benefit by reducing costs in transporting its municipal waste to landfills and saving valuable landfill space for future needs.

In August, Sen. Cornyn traveled to Abilene for a meeting with local officials, where he discussed his ongoing efforts in the Senate to strengthen domestic energy production and lower gas prices, and also received an update on key issues important to the community.
