Senators Charles E. Schumer and Hillary Rodham Clinton released the following joint statement Wednesday urging the Securities and Exchange Commission to temporarily halt short-selling of major financial institutions:
"The SEC has the power to take a temporary but important step to help restore a measure of stability to our financial markets. We are urging the Commission to act swiftly in order to preserve New York's position as the world's preeminent financial center and protect tens of thousands of New York jobs."
